GreenGeeks is a fair pick if you want cheap cPanel shared hosting and care where the electricity comes from. It starts at $2.95/mo for a year, then renews at several times that price. Its green claim is specific: it pays for renewable energy certificates equal to three times the power it uses. If you only care about price or speed, compare first.

What does GreenGeeks cost after the first year?
This is the question that matters. GreenGeeks is a budget-level hosting service. They offer everything that the big boys do at a discounted rate, at least in year one. On top of that, they do it with the environment in mind. The intro price is only for the first term. Under GreenGeeks’ Terms of Service, plans renew automatically at the then-current renewal fee, and you have to switch auto-renewal off in your dashboard at least 5 business days before the renewal date.
| Plan | Websites and storage | Intro price (12-month prepay) | Renewal | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lite | 1 site, 25 GB | $2.95/mo | $13.95/mo | GreenGeeks pricing page |
| Pro | Unlimited sites, 50 GB | $4.95/mo | $18.95/mo | GreenGeeks pricing page |
| Premium | Unlimited sites, 100 GB | $8.95/mo | $30.95/mo | GreenGeeks pricing page |
Three details to know before checkout:
- Paying monthly adds a $15 setup fee, per GreenGeeks’ own blog. The 12-month prepay avoids it.
- Longer terms don’t get the intro price. GreenGeeks’ pricing article lists 24 months at the full $13.95, $18.95 and $30.95 rate and 36 months at $13.45, $18.45 and $30.45. One year is the sensible commitment.
- A $2.95 plan renewing at $13.95 is roughly a 4.7x jump. Budget for the renewal, not the banner.
- The 30-day money-back guarantee covers the start of your service only, not renewals. Setup fees and add-ons are non-refundable.

Is the GreenGeeks green energy claim real?
Mostly, yes, and it is more specific than most “eco hosting” marketing.
GreenGeeks advertises that they are 300 percent green. What does this mean? It means that for every unit of power that is consumed, they will purchase three times that amount of power in renewable energy certificates. The whole idea is that if you use GreenGeeks, you will not just have a lower carbon footprint, you will have a negative carbon footprint, on paper at least. In other words, you’re having a positive impact on the environment.
GreenGeeks calls it a 300% renewable energy match: it puts back three times what it consumes. In practice, GreenGeeks tells the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) how many servers and staff it has, BEF estimates the yearly energy use, and GreenGeeks buys renewable energy certificates (RECs) equal to three times that estimate. The newest certificate on its site, dated January 23, 2026, covers 300% of estimated 2025 electricity use: 2,592 Green-e certified RECs, each worth 1,000 kWh. GreenGeeks says it has been an EPA Green Power Partner since 2009, and it plants one tree per new hosting account through One Tree Planted.
What that does not mean: your server does not run on a solar panel. RECs are a market instrument. They pay for renewable generation somewhere on the grid, and your site still draws power from the local mix at the data center. The stated 3x multiple, with a named partner and a dated certificate, is the part worth paying attention to.
One caution. The 3x figure rests on BEF’s estimate of GreenGeeks’ use, not a metered reading from each data center. That is normal for REC programs, but it is still an estimate.
What we tested
Nothing, yet. WhatsTheHost has not run speed or uptime tests on GreenGeeks for this rebuild, so there are no benchmark numbers on this page. When we test, results will go here with dates and method.
For an outside view: HostScore, an independent review site, lists GreenGeeks at an overall score of 79.8% (page updated September 17, 2026). That is their number, not ours.

- Free Let’s Encrypt SSL with automatic renewal on every plan.
- cPanel, which most tutorials and migration tools assume you have.
- 150+ one-click installers, including WordPress, Joomla and Drupal.

Cons
- Renewal prices are several times the intro rate.
- A few hidden fees for refunds: monthly billing costs a $15 setup fee, and it is non-refundable.
- The 3x green match is based on an estimate of energy use, not metered data.
- No independent test data from us yet.
Best features of GreenGeeks hosting
Backups made daily
Not every hosting company makes backups of your website daily. GreenGeeks understands exactly how important your data is for you. They put their money where their mouth is and perform backups daily. If anything does happen to your data, you will only lose one day’s worth of work on it.
Unlimited hosting
Having unlimited websites is a beautiful feature for a Web hosting company. On the Pro and Premium plans, you may host an unlimited number of sites under one account. If you are in the business of flipping domains, GreenGeeks is an excellent place to park them.
Free to set up on a yearly plan
On a 12-month prepay, the only fee that you’ll have to pay GreenGeeks is your hosting fee. They will not charge you to set up your website on their servers. Monthly billing is different: that adds the $15 setup fee.
Good for WordPress
GreenGeeks works well with WordPress. They run cPanel and allow one-click installation of WordPress, along with 150+ other apps.
Where are GreenGeeks’ servers?
GreenGeeks lets you pick Chicago, Montreal, Amsterdam or Singapore when you sign up. Singapore was the newest, added in January 2023. Pick the location closest to most of your visitors. Moving later usually means a migration.
Support
GreenGeeks offers round-the-clock customer support 24 hours a day, according to its own pages. We have not timed its responses for this review. If support speed is your deciding factor, open a pre-sales chat and see how long it takes.
A few fees you can’t get back
GreenGeeks offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. What they don’t shout about is that the other fees, like the monthly setup fee and add-ons, are nonrefundable, and renewals are not covered at all. Although this practice is standard among hosting companies, read the refund terms before you add extras at checkout.
Security
The basics are covered: free SSL with auto-renewal, SSH and SFTP for file access, automatic daily backups, and a firewall with DDoS protection, per GreenGeeks’ own pricing page. We have not tested a restore. Keep your own copy of backups for any site that earns money.
Bottom line
GreenGeeks is a solid budget Web hosting company with a green twist, as long as you budget for the renewal. They understand how business works in today’s day and age: plenty of buyers have a soft spot for companies that take a measure of corporate responsibility to care about the planet.
Who should pick an alternative?
- You want the lowest total cost over three years. GreenGeeks’ renewal jump erases the intro savings. Compare the cheapest hosts that renew low.
- You run a busy online store. Shared hosting of any brand is the wrong tier. Look at managed WordPress or a VPS.
- You need root access or custom software. A cloud VPS such as AWS Lightsail fits better. See our AWS vs SiteGround comparison.
- You want the fastest shared host. We have no test data to back GreenGeeks here. See best web hosting for picks with evidence.

FAQ
Is GreenGeeks actually eco-friendly?
It buys renewable energy certificates equal to three times its power use through the Bonneville Environmental Foundation. For every unit of power that is consumed, they will purchase three times that amount. That offsets more than it uses on paper. Your site still runs on the data center’s normal grid power.
How much does GreenGeeks cost after the first year?
GreenGeeks’ pricing page lists renewals of $13.95, $18.95 and $30.95 per month for Lite, Pro and Premium. Confirm the figure at checkout, because hosts change these without notice.
Is GreenGeeks good for WordPress?
For a small WordPress site, yes. They provide a lot of the basics and work well with WordPress. It has cPanel and a one-click WordPress installer. For a large or busy site, shared hosting from any company will feel slow.
Who founded GreenGeeks?
Trey Gardner founded GreenGeeks in 2008, according to the company’s About page.
Does GreenGeeks charge a setup fee?
Only on monthly billing, which carries a $15 setup fee according to GreenGeeks. The 12-month prepay does not.
