Our Official Greengeeks Hosting Review
Can you guess what Greengeeks is famous for? They’re famous for making an environmental impact in the Web hosting industry. From being a member of the Environmental Protection Agency to using wind energy for their servers, they are a forward thinking company keeping the planet in mind.
Best Features of Greengeeks Hosting
Greengeeks is budget-level hosting service. They offer everything that the big boys do at a discounted rate. On top of that, they do it with the environment in mind.
Greengeeks Embraces the Green Initiative
Greengeeks advertises that they are 300 percent green. What does this mean? It means that for every unit of power that is consumed, they will purchase three times that amount of power in wind energy. The whole idea is that if you use Greengeeks, you will not just have a lower carbon footprint, you willhave a negative carbon footprint. In other words, you’re having a positive impact on the environment.
Backups Made Daily
Not every hosting company makes backups of your website daily. Greengeeks understands exactly how important your data is for you. They put their money where their mouth is and perform server backups daily. If anything does happen to your data, you will only lose one day worth of work on it.
Having unlimited domains is a beautiful feature for a Web hosting company. What this means is that you may have an unlimited number of registered domains under one account. This goes on to include an infinitenumber of subdomains and email accounts as well. If you are in the business of flipping domains, Greengeeks is an excellent place to park them.
Free to Set up and Migrate
The only fee that you’ll have to pay Greengeeks is your monthly service fees. They will not charge you to set up your website on their servers nor will they charge you to migrate over to Greengeeks. The same principle applies if you wish to transfer data from one domain to another. In that respect, data migration is free. It is all included in your monthly fee.
Designed for WordPress
Greengeeks is designed for WordPress. They have an excellent cPanel (sans email control, see below) and allow one click installation of WordPress and any compatible plug-ins. If you were to explore the Greengeeks help section, you would find an entire section dedicated to helping you with WordPress. Also, when you use WordPress with Greengeeks, Greengeeks will offer you a free domain name.
They’ll Get You Started
Greengeeks does more than does offer you templates for you to build your website. They provide a website building service for free. Using one of their templates, Greengeeks will craft your website with all of your information, create five email addresses attached to your domain name, and submit your site to Google, Yahoo and Bing search directories.
Plenty of Scalable Options
When you’re ready, Greengeeks will allow you to scale your website by offering VPS or dedicated server hosting options. All of the standard goodies come with it – including dedicated SSL certificates. Dedicated SSL certificates are crucial for people who are running their e-commerce websites as it makes the website transaction more secure.
Downsides of Greengeeks Hosting
The Good and Bad of Their Customer Support
Greengeeks offers round-the-clock customer support 24 hours a day. Although their phone support is not 24 hours, their lives chat support is. That’s the good part about their customer service policy. The part we weren’t so sure about was when we received support – we got the feeling that their customer support representatives could use more training.
A Few Hidden Fees for Refunds
Greengeeks offers a 30-day moneyback guarantee. What they don’t tell you is that the other fees, like domain name registration, are nonrefundable. Although this practice is standard among all hosting companies, we found that their registration fees were up to three times higher than other websites or if we had registered the domain name ourselves. In other words, it feels as if Greengeeks is making a profit off domain name registration and refusing to offer refunds under the guise of calling it domain name registration.
Lack of Mobile Site Creation Tools
Greengeeks does not provide tools to help you with mobile site creation. Every website owner knows that they must have two versions of their sites – one for desktops and laptops, and one for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. There are other places you can turn to, however.
Unable to Manage Email through cPanel
We threw this one in there because every other Web hosting company that offers email has the option to manage said email through theirrespective cPanel. Greengeeks does not provide this. They do have the email management tools, but they’re not available through cPanel.
Greengeeks is an excellent budget Web hosting company with the green twist. They understand how business works in today’s day and age – that it is run by Millennials. Millennials have a soft spot for companies who take a measure of corporate responsibility to care about the planet.
