Domain.com Hosting Reviews

domain-main

Domain.com is primarily a domain registrar, like GoDaddy and Namecheap. While they offer pretty cheap web hosting that checks the boxes, user reviews have not been positive overall.

How Good is Domain.com Hosting?

One of the world’s largest providers of domain names and site hosting, Domain.com offers a wide range of plans including VPS hosting, but it specializes in affordable shared hosting. Its downsides include no uptime guarantee, and with its most basic features, extras will cost you more. See Official Site

Our Official Domain.com Hosting Review

If you’re looking for a basic web hosting destination, Domain.com can provide you with the storage, email, and other tools to give you a foundation, but it does lack some features and pricing options that its competitors offer. They're in the same family as Bluehost and HostGator, part of Endurance International Group.

Best Features of Domain.com Hosting

Domain.com offers features at a low price that will get you started with an entry-level web host. They don't really have anything that stands out…besides owning Domain.com.

1. Domain Services

The domain services offered by Domain.com are some of the best available. Not only do you get your domain name, but you get plenty of features to complement your website.  Things like transfer lock, URL forwarding, email forwarding, and DNS management are crucial to helping you get your website up and running efficiently.  Many other web hosting services make you pay for the add on’s to your website, which can add up, especially if you’re planning on staying with the hosting company for a long time.  Having all the add on’s at your disposal can make your website run more efficiently, and improve on your growth.

2. Easy Website Setup

Domain.com provides multiple tools for building a website, including the highly-rated Weebly. Weebly uses a drag-and-drop functionality that allows you to build an attractive site that can include contact forms, social media links, and more in a short amount of time. Domain.com also allows you to set up your WordPress-powered website with them. It’s an easy process, and once it is installed, you can create posts and install plug-ins like normal. Domain.com is optimized to enhance WordPress’s performance and allows for automatic software and plug-in updates. You’ll also be able to set up an email account in a matter of minutes by simply visiting the main area and creating a username and password.

3. Prices

The prices for their plans are affordable and come with everything you need to get your website running smoothly. Unless you’re planning on starting a professional website right away, you won’t have to spend too much money to get everything up and running.  For the price of $9.99 a year, an individual can set up their own personal website.  This is ideal for those looking to start small and change their plan when your company starts to grow.  You won’t find too many companies offering less than a dollar a month for web domains.  It’s good for those just starting out until they’re ready to upgrade their plans.

4. Premium Domains

Since many domains have been used, or are already in use, getting a premium domain is the ideal way to get your website to stand out. com allows users to find a premium domain name that stands out from the crowd.  While it doesn’t have to be complicated, they can help you find a premium domain name that will drive traffic to your website.  Once you find your premium domain name, you can register it right away, which is ideal for those needing to get their website up and running.  Using a premium domain name is crucial to bringing in people, and the unique name is ideal for small businesses.

5. Marketing Services

When a small business is just starting out, getting traffic can be difficult. com provides excellent marketing services to help your business grow.  They offer premium marketing services including full-service design and marketing and design services.  They work with Google Apps, Search Engine Optimization, Credit Card Processing, and Search Engine Marketing.  This is the perfect tool for those that have trouble marketing their website.  Using these tools can help a website jump to the top of a Google search, allowing more people to visit the website.

6. Email Services

Domain.com works with Google to improve email services through Gmail. Domain.com will give you a custom email for your website, and allow you to use your brand as your email address.  You can collaborate with your Gmail and Google Drive, to make everything easier for you.  You can create a team and communicate with them, and you don’t have to put in too much work.  You will need to log in, but once you’re in, everything will be set up and ready for you to go.  You can access email from any device, allowing you to get into contact with anyone with a quick push of a button.  The price starts at $4.17 a month, making it affordable for anyone looking to upgrade their email system.

7. Security Features

Domain.com’s web hosting packages come with a number of security features. You’ll get a password-protected directory and SSL support. An SSL certificate will protect valuable information like credit card transactions and sign-ups.

8. Helpful Customer Service

Domain.com has telephone support available 24/7. They also offer a ticketing system for support requests. Urgent requests should be made by phone, and ticketing requests are usually responded to within 24 hours. You’ll have access to the knowledge base, which covers all of the basics of account hosting, passwords, and access. There is also a user guide and a range of tutorials. The customer service staff is friendly, easy to understand, and fairly knowledgeable.

Downsides of Domain.com Hosting

Although Domain.com offers simple site creation and a helpful support team, there are some downsides to the service.

1. Bidding on Domain Names

The technological world is competitive, and it’s understandable that Domain.com can’t give out domain names left and right. You need to pre-register to have a chance at getting a domain name.  The Early Access Period is good for getting a jump start, but it does cost extra.  The one good thing about not getting the domain you want is that you will be refunded the money you put in for registration.  While it’s not a perfect system, it would be good to know what your odds are for getting a domain name.

2. Faster Response Time Issue

Issues can come up at any time, and it’s good to know they can be resolved quickly. While Domain.com does take calls at any time, they can start to slack with some pressing issues.  Whether it’s a lack of knowledge about the products or a long time to reply to an inquiry, some issues should be resolved quickly.  Things such as shutting down domain names shouldn’t happen, but sometimes wires get crossed.  It happens, but it shouldn’t take a week to resolve the simple issue of resetting passwords.  Perhaps a better ticketing system or training may be helpful.

3. Worse Admin Panel

Their admin panel appears to be several years behind on updates, and improving it would go a long way to making it a more efficient hosting site. It takes a while for pages to load, which can be frustrating for anyone visiting the site.  Even though they do offer plenty of domain names, they could improve their admin panel to make hosting even easier for their customers.  While it may work for some people, others who drive in a lot of traffic can’t afford to wait for people to sit around for the page to load.

4. No Privacy

When your private information is revealed, it can lead to plenty of problems down the line. It’s not just a few bits and pieces about your personal information that’s revealed, instead, it is pretty much everything.  If you didn’t have to pay them extra for hiding your personal information, that would be ideal.  Unfortunately, unless you pay for them to hide your information, you’re stuck.  It can lead to many problems down the line, so it may be better to pay them and have your personal information hidden from the public.  Not ideal, but better than having everyone find out any information about you.

5. No Monthly Plans

Domain.com does not offer month-to-month shared web hosting options. You must choose an annual plan, and there aren’t any offers to save money by signing up for a long-term plan. For example, you’ll pay the same if you sign up for one year or three years. This can be an issue for people who prefer not to make a year-long commitment, or who would prefer to split up their payments over the course of a year.

6. Extras Will Cost You More

While the basic plan is affordable, it doesn’t offer a ton of features. By the time you get what you need out of the web host, you might end up paying more than you would with a different service. Domain.com charges a domain transfer fee if you want to port over a URL and many other hosting services do not. If you need more than 100 email addresses, you’ll need to upgrade to a higher plan. The basic e-commerce has limits on pages and products and is missing other features like previewing pages before publishing them. To remove these limits, you’ll have to pay for an upgraded version.

7. No Uptime Guarantee

Domain.com does not publicize an uptime guarantee, nor do they give any data about uptime history or performance on its website. While they state they take backups, they don’t clarify when backups are taken or whether they are available to clients. Domain.com does state that they have a Tier 1 facility that offers redundancy and 24/7 monitoring. However, many user reviews talk about poor uptime, while other reviews don’t have a problem with them, so it doesn’t give potential users a clear picture of uptime.

Bottom Line:

For those looking for a small to mid-range service that offers most of the functionality needed to host a website at a low cost, then it’s worth it to take a look at Domain.com. With their main focus being shared hosting plans, the hosting, prices, and support are all about average and will help basic users get a site up and running within a few minutes. Although you’ll get good support for general questions and less advanced issues, more advanced users might not get everything they want with Domain.com since they tend to just offer the basics.View More Features

What People Say About Domain.com

Many people have spoken about Domain.com, and it’s always a good idea to check out what the masses are saying.  On this section, we will start off with the good things people are saying, and delve into the unflattering reviews.

The Good

“It is one of the easiest domain services I’ve ever used.  It is a simple service that provides the tools you need to succeed.  It makes other hosting services look cluttered and disorganized.  I can use the same domain login for everything I need on my website.”

“Since I have started using Domain.com, I have noticed how easy it is to use the features.  The Full WordPress, custom emails, and other features to create a website are right there at your disposal.  Their response time to emails, and fixing issues are quick and easy to figure out.  While I am not a fan of keeping personal information hidden by paying an extra fee, they excel in other areas.”

“This is one of the best hosting companies.  The speed of the servers is amazing, the websites load quickly, and tech support is knowledgeable and helpful.  Their great prices can’t be beat, and they know how to take care of their customers.  I always recommend Domain.com to my friends and colleagues, based on their prices and customer support.”

“Their features are like other web hosting sites, but they know how to keep everything up and running.  Even if you have multiple domains, they can keep everything up and running.  One of my favorite things about Domain.com is that they are willing to help you, no matter what time it is.  This is extremely important to me, and I love the fact that I can call them up at any time and have any issues fixed promptly.”

“While Domain.com doesn’t have all the features that other web hosting sites have, it is still one of the best web hosting sites available.  You can try out all the features they provide to maximize the potential of your website.  Domain.com has everything you need to get up and running.  You shouldn’t waste your time with other web hosting sites when Domain.com does everything and then some.”

The Bad

“The admin panel leaves a lot to be desired, and it could severely use an upgrade.  Their outdated admin panel takes a long time to load up, and the site will sometimes close without any provocation.  While they excel at domain names, if you’re looking for hosting, you may want to go in another direction.  You should consider getting a domain from them, and then using a different service for hosting.”

“I am not fond of their customer service, and their domain registrar needs a lot of work.  When you submit a simple question, it can a while to receive a response.  Even if you connect with a person, they may not know what you’re talking about, and it can be a while to get off the phone.  I would recommend going with a different service that has more knowledge about their products, and how well they can help you.”

“I made the decision to get a domain name through Domain.com.  When I found one I liked, I put it in my cart, and when I went to make the purchase, an error popped.  I was locked out of my account for two days, and tried various means to get in contact with someone.  I emailed, but didn’t receive a response.  The next day, I called, waited for them to check my mail, but without a response.  Finally, I got in contact with someone who reset my password, and I could get back on my website.  I wouldn’t recommend this hosting site for those that need good customer service.”

“When the previous owners sold their company to Domain.com, I had to verify my ownership of my own domain.  I had contacted them to let them know I would be out of town without internet access, and was reassured my domain wouldn’t be suspended.  They removed information in the DNS registry, which doesn’t resolve the issues properly.  It took several hours to get it fixed up and running.  It was such a process, that I couldn’t use their service any longer.”

Final Verdict

While Domain.com has had a few people complain about their services and customer support, they have people that absolutely adore the service.  After hearing what people have had to say about them, looking at their products, and seeing what they do well and what they could work on should help you determine if Domain.com is right for you.

How can I renew my domains?

When you’re ready to renew your domains, you can go through Domain.com. You will choose the domains you want renewed, and follow the directions. The domain renewal rates will be posted, allowing you to select your plan. It’s a good time to upgrade if you’re ready. You can access the options through the control panel.

What happens to domains that aren’t renewed?

If you don’t want to lose your domain names, you need to take some steps to safeguard your domains you want to keep. You will get reminders 30 days before it expires, and if payment is not made, the domain will expire. It will be deactivated and replaced among other expired domains, along with the services included with plan. 30 after expiration, the domain name will go into the public domain, where someone else can purchase. If it goes 45 days without being claimed, any charges can be put on the renewal of the domain name. Eventually, if no one claims it, the domain name will go back into the public domain for sale.

What does it mean if a domain is in “Redemption?”

When a domain name is sent to redemption, it can be purchased by another party. However, you can redeem the domain for up to 30 days. You will need to log into your account and file a ticket in the support system. The fees for a redemption is $99.99, and a normal renewal fee will need to be paid, as well. When the Redemption Period ends, there is a five-day delete cycle that will allow anyone to register and receive the domain name.

What if there are errors on my account information?

If you spot any errors on your account, you can change them. You can correct any incorrect fields through the “Change Account Info” and put in the right information. If you need to change your email address, go to “Change Email Addresses” and change it accordingly. You may have some issues if you have more than one domain. You can change each one to help you finish your updated changes.

What is “auto renew”, and can I change it?

When a name is newly registered, security precautions are placed to auto-renew. It prevents your payments from lapsing, causing you to lose your domain name. You will stay in complete control with the auto-renew system, and it is billed 15 days before the expiration date. If a payment does not go through, a second attempt will be made five days before expiration. Every charge is placed on the credit card that is on file when you signed up. You can change your card information if it is expired through the “update credit card info” option under your log in screen. You can set the auto renew for your domain name, so you don’t lose it through your account information page.

What happens if auto renew fails?

The most likely reason why your auto renew has failed, is because the credit card you had on file isn’t valid. You can resolve this issue by updating your credit card information through your account information. If it’s less than the 15-day expiration period, you may need to renew your domain name, as well.

Why am I getting renewal notices for domains at different email addresses?

The simplest explanation is that every domain has a different email address for each domain name. You can consolidate all the domain names into one email address, you need to make sure your information is the same for every domain name. You can log in to your account, and follow the directions for every domain you have. You can change the email address so it only sends to the one you use most often. You can modify your email addresses, and make it more convenient for you.
